« How to Succeeed in Online Education   A Bible Timeline And Preaching The Word Of God »

by Mary Poodel

Distance programs allow busy students to juggle school with jobs, kids, and other adult responsibilities that often make returning to a traditional school schedule impossible.

One of the most important questions that any candidate for an online education program can ask themselves is an online education right for me? Distance programs take a large amount of self-discipline and the ability to make a schedule and stick to it.

On-line education programs require students to be able to work unsupervised; without the presence of an instructor or classmates. Instructors communicate with students through different on-line methods but there is no opportunity for hands-on training. There are no support networks, guidance counselors or study groups that you can meet with face-to-face. Everything is conducted online. Successful on-line students need to be comfortable working on their own.

Although distance students work alone, they still must be able to interact easily with their instructors and classmates using online tools. Experience with different forms of online communication is necessary for anyone who is thinking about entering a distance education program. Poor communication skills can make a student’s chances of succeeding in an online program slim at best.

The ability to express one’s thoughts, ideas and questions through the written word is also an important skill necessary to succeed in an on-line program. Precise writing helps students quickly convey to the instructor any problems that may be having which allows the instructor to evaluate and aid in the student’s progress. The inability to effectively communicate in writing is a leading factor in many on-line education program failures.

Individuals in distance learning courses need a vast amount of self-discipline. Unlike traditional school settings where there is a set schedule, online students must create their own study schedules and stick to them. Distance learning students must be able to block out the everyday distractions such as children, the phone or television programs and concentrate on the task at hand.

Students are responsible for their own success in a distance learning classroom. They must be able to complete research and assignments on their own time. For some, this is the best part of distance learning; it allows students the flexibility needed in today’s hectic world. For others, this a road to frustration and failure. Some people just work better in classroom settings.

Distance learning is not an inexpensive alternative to brick and mortar schools; it often costs the same as a traditional college education. This makes it vitally important to find out first if distance learning is for you.
